Locatus Explorer ® Benchmark Explorer

With the Locatus Benchmark Explorer you can quickly and effectively compare key figures for shopping areas, towns or cities and sector patterns.

For example, you might want to know how many retail outlets there are in municipalities with similar numbers of inhabitants. Or how the retail floor space compares with other places. The Benchmark Explorer can answer your questions.

Gent versus Utrecht

To give you an idea, we have compared Gent with Utrecht. What are the differences and similarities between the two towns given that both have around 250,000 inhabitants and a comparable retail atmosphere. A few facts:

Gent Utrecht
Number of inhabitants 237.250 261.540
Number of retail outlets 3.956 3.716
Number of outlets per 1000 inh. 17 14
Share of multiples (shops) 20,2% 39,1%
Share of multiples (retail floor area) 41% 65%
Average retail floor area per store 150m² 243m²

If we look at the spread of stores across the main categories, we can see that there are three significant differences:

Gent has 1.4 times as many outlets in the Everyday and Leisure categories as Utrecht, while Utrecht has 1.2 times more stores in the 'In & around the home’ category . In terms of floor area, these differences are even greater. The differences between these two towns are also echoed between the two countries.
